Irene Dakin Paden papers, 1931-1952.

Boxes 1-3 contain binders of notes, quotations, maps, transcripts from Irene Paden's library research on California and Oregon Trails and on Big Oak Flat Road. Includes many excerpts from trail diaries. Boxes 4-6 contain 48 notebooks featuring Paden's own trail diaries (1931-1952), but also including diaries of vacation trips to Boston, New Orleans and Pacific Northwest. Box 7 contains drafts of Paden's "Big Oak Flat Road" and "Wake of the Prairie Schooner."

Historian, traveller. Her two books "The Wake of the Prairie Schooner" (1943) and "Prairie Schooner Detours" (1949) describe overland trails for those who wish to follow them in twentieth century automobiles. Her "Big Oak Flat Road" (1955) is a history of route from Stockton to Yosemite. From 1931 through 1952, Mrs. Paden and her husband, William, each year travelled some portion of overland trails for a month or two.
